Letter #221
Mercurino Arborio di GATTINARA to Ioannes DANTISCUSTordesillas, 1524-11-03
English register:
Gattinara received Dantiscus’ letter before lunch but couldn’t reply until late at night because he was very busy making preparations for the emperor’s departure. He has informed the emperor of the arrival of Dantiscus and his colleague [Stanisław Borek] and has obtained an audience for Saturday [November 5]. He suggests that the Polish envoys – if they are happy with the reply received earlier – should come together with Pedro García and bring the minutae of the document of investiture according to the sample the chancellor provided. If, however, there are any unresolved problems with the investiture, then there is no point in Dantiscus and Borek’s travel [to Tordesillas].
Though Gattinara will come to Valladolid as soon as the emperor leaves, any decisions will have to be left until the next meeting with the emperor, in Madrid, where the ruler will arrive no sooner than November 21.
Gattinara asks Dantiscus for warn him of his arrival. He offers him lodging at his quarters and will provide for his horses and servants, too.
