Ioannes DANTISCUS to Tiedemann GIESE

English register:

Dantiscus has acquainted himself with the explanations of the Gdańsk (Danzig) Town Council and of Johann von Werden. True to the addressee’s expectations, their accounts are a discredit to them. Dantiscus expects the situation to worsen after the next Diet [of the Kingdom of Poland] to be held in Cracow. After considering what to write to the King [Sigismund I Jagiellon], he has decided the letter should be worded just as Giese has proposed, but asks him to add a remark to the fact that what he himself has written on the matter, he wrote on joint behalf [of the Royal Prussian councillors].

Dantiscus promises to make sure Giese is reimbursed at the Diet for the provisions given to the messenger.

Dantiscus sends a letter received from Doctor [Stanisław] Hozjusz (Hosius). He fears war with Turkey caused by the Sultan’s [Suleiman the Magnificent’s] anger at the marriage of Isabella [Jagiellon to John Zápolya]. The Sultan intends to occupy or harass Hungary. Since his fleet has been destroyed, he intends to fight on land alone.
