Letter #5766

Alfonso de VALDÉS to Ioannes DANTISCUS
[Augsburg], [1530-10-31 — 1530-11-05]

English register:

Valdés sends Dantiscus the petitions of the queen [Bona] approved in Mantua, a sample of the letter to be sent, a letter from the pope as well as the well flogged Thomas and a text about events in this city [Augsburg] connected with the Lutherans. He asks Dantiscus to read this last text, correct it and supplement it together with Cornelis [De Schepper] if he is there.

"Alfonsi Valdesii litteras XL ineditas" in: Homenaje a Menéndez y Pelayo: Estudios de erudición Española., ed. by Eduard Boehmer, vol. 1, Madrid, 1899, p. 385-412 adds here a footnote to Clement VII’s letter to Charles V 1530-11-27 (cf. Correspondenz des Kaisers Karl V. Aus dem königlichen Archiv und der Bibliothèque de Bourgogne zu Brüssels. Erster Band 1513-1532, ed. by Karl Lanz, Leipzig, F.A. Brockhaus, 1844 Lanz 1844cf. In this letter, the Pope does not address the Emperor Dilecte Fili, while he gives this designation to German princes. Boehmer’s reference seems wrong. Valdés possibly means a non extant papal bull for Dantiscus in connection with his nomination for the bishopric of Kulm. The nomination was decided in Rome 1530-08-03 (Cf. cf. Urkundenbuch des Bisthums Culm 1243-1774, ed. by Carl Peter Woelky, Dantzig, 1887 UBCcf. Urkundenbuch des Bisthums Culm 1243-1774, ed. by Carl Peter Woelky, Dantzig, 1887 , No. 860, p. 724).

[2] It seems probable that ratio rerum in hac urbe gestarum cum Lutheranis is a text published at the end of 1530 by Lieven Algoet, entitled cf. Pro religione Christiana res gestae in comitiis Augustae Vindelicorum habitis. Anno Domini M.D. XXX., [Augsburg?], 1530 Pro religione Christiana res gestae in Comitiis Augustae Vindelicorum habitis anno Domini 1530cf. Pro religione Christiana res gestae in comitiis Augustae Vindelicorum habitis. Anno Domini M.D. XXX., [Augsburg?], 1530 . Imperial privilege for printing was issued for Lieven Algoet and countersigned by Alfonso de Valdés. Benjamin Wiffen (rightly in my opinion) supposed that it was Valdés, who actually wrote the booklet (cf. cf. Benjamin B. Wiffen, Life and writings of Juán de Valdés, otherwise Valdesso, Spanish reformer in the sixteenth century, ed. by John Thomas Betts, London, 1865 WIFFENcf. Benjamin B. Wiffen, Life and writings of Juán de Valdés, otherwise Valdesso, Spanish reformer in the sixteenth century, ed. by John Thomas Betts, London, 1865 , p. 90). Wiffen’s opinion was discussed and contradicted by Fermin Caballero (cf. cf. Fermin Caballero, Conquenses ilustres, vol. 4: Alonso y Juan de Valdés, Madrid, 1875 CABALLERO 1875cf. Fermin Caballero, Conquenses ilustres, vol. 4: Alonso y Juan de Valdés, Madrid, 1875 , p. 158-159). Cf. also cf. Ioannes Dantiscus' correspondence with Alfonso de Valdés.
