[Ioannes DANTISCUS] to [Sigismund II Augustus Jagiellon]

English register:

Georg Mandt has asked Dantiscus for a letter vouching for him to the addressee. In 1543, he entrusted a sum of money to Hans Glasow, a defaulter who, upon the expiration of the repayment deadline, begged the addressee’s father [Sigismund I Jagiellon] for a five-year letter of safe conduct in order to avoid the consequences of his debt. Due to the delay, Mandt is incurring losses without any way of recovering the money owed to him. Allegedly, the defaulter has also turned to the addressee asking for a letter of safe conduct for a another five years.

The king has deferred the consideration of the matter until the future diet of the Kingdom, in order to establish a procedure for dealing with such defaulters. If he adopts measures such as those used by the emperor [Charles V Habsburg], who has introduced the death penalty for such persons in Lower Germany, this would deter abuses related to the procurement of letters of safe conduct and would help the community.

Dantiscus asks the addressee to compel Glasow to repay the money he ows to the creditor.
