[Ioannes DANTISCUS] to Stanisław HOZJUSZ (HOSIUS)

Dantiscus has recommended to the bishop of Cracow (Kraków) [Samuel Maciejowski] a young man, Martin Allexwangen, son of Jacob Allexwangen, councillor of the city of Elbing (Elbląg), who served him for some considerable time as a scribe. He then asked Maciejowski to take him into service as a scribe of the [royal] chancellery. He now turns to the addressee with a request to support his efforts in this regard.

Although Dantiscus does not anticipate a refusal, should the request be turned down, he asks the addressee to take the young man into his own service. He makes this request not only on his own account, but also on account of the young man’s father, who holds a prominent position in his city. Dantiscus argues that the addressee will gain his goodwill and thereby prompt him to return the favour.
