[Ioannes DANTISCUS] to [Kaspar HANNAU]

Although illness still forces Dantiscus to dictate his letters, he assures the addressee that he is already feeling better. He sends a copy of his letter to the addressee dated 7 November. He assumes that the addressee has already collected 150 ducats for his upkeep from the Fuggers.

Dantiscus has received two letters from Hannau (dated 17 September and 28 October), as well as Hannau’s letter to [Stanisław] Hozjusz (Hosius). From the royal court he has been sent a letter from those four [cardinals appointed to examine the case of Alexander Sculteti: Gian Pietro Carafa, Juan Álvarez y Alva de Toledo, Pietro Paolo Parisi, and Bartolomeo Guidiccioni]. He assumes a reply to that letter will soon be given, likely not differing from the opinion of the addressee. Due to fatigue from dictation, he is unable to respond at greater length for now. He sends this note to acknowledge the receipt of the letters and to announce that a fuller reply will follow shortly.

If he manages to do so before an envoy is sent to the royal court, he will attach the enclosed slips to the letter.

Salutem tibi precor, mi carissime nepos, et cum hoc ineunte novo anno quam plurimos alios faustos et felices.

Quod dictaturam nondum deposuerim, quam mallem quispiam Romanorum, quorum haec fuit dignitas potissima, haberet, sine tamen mea affecta valetudine, non te perturbet, in qua me in dies (Deo gratia) meliusculum sentio. Quae ad te scripsi VII Novembris, ex adiuncto habebis exemplo. Iam, ut existimo, centum quinquaginta ducatos tibi a dominis Fuggaris numeratos esse, quibus te aliquamdiu sustinere possis.

Accepi interim a te binas, unas XVII Septembris, alteras XXVIII Octobris datas, eas item, quas ad dominum doctorem Hosium dedisti. Missae mihi sunt praeterea ex aula regia quattuor illorum, ut scis, litterae, quibus brevi respondebitur neque a tua sententia responsum, ut arbitror, erit alienum. Ceterum, quomodo res aulicae in olla illa et quam tarde coquantur, cum etiam id apud vos in usu sit, non est tibi incognitum. In praesens tuis copiosis et gratis mihi litteris, ut velim, fusius respondere fessus dictando nequeo, has saltem ad te [dedi], ut scias me tuas accepisse, paulo post abunde de omnibus rescripturus.

Vale et in Dei benignitate feliciter diutissime vale.

Si quid supererit temporis antequam hunc nuntium meum ad aulam absolvero, ex schedis inditis accipies.
