Letter #2109

Ioannes DANTISCUS to Tiedemann GIESE
Heilsberg (Lidzbark Warmiński), 1539-03-15

English register:

Dantiscus proposes that all the [Royal Prussian] lords confer and provide a joint reply to the letter he has received from the Duke [Albrecht I von Hohenzollern-Ansbach]. Among other things, in this letter the Duke questions the justifiability of grain being held [in Gdańsk (Danzig)] and declares he will not let any [Polish] ship carrying grain leave his port [in Königsberg]. Knowing that Giese has received a similar letter from the Duke, Dantiscus does not quote the other matters discussed in the letter. He will send a copy of [the Duke’s] letter to the Town Councils of Gdańsk and Elbing (Elbląg), and enjoins Giese to notify the Thorn (Toruń) Town Council.

He would like to manage the matter in such a way that the Duke does not have to send envoys to the next [Royal Prussian] Diet and that they will not be forced to conclude new treaties with him, something the Duke is demanding separately of Dantiscus.

Thoronenses in iis Dominatio Vestra Reverendissima commonere potest. Velimque sic rem temperaremus, ne opus esset, ut suos ad conventum proximum illustrissimus dominus dux nuntios mitteret nosque cum illis novos tractatus, quos quaerit et a me seorsum postulat, inire cogeremur. Sententiam Dominatio Vestra Reverendissima tenet.

Quam diutissime feliciter valere ex animo cupio.

Datae celeriter Heilsberg, XV Martii 1539.

Reverendissimae Dominationis Vestrae frater integerrimus Ioannes episcopus Varmiensis etc. scripsit
