Letter #1844

Cornelis DE SCHEPPER to Ioannes DANTISCUS
Lyon, 1538-04-03

English register:

De Schepper declares that at present a host of duties prevent him from writing a long letter, but Fabian [Wojanowski] will recount the news from both Spain and France as well as the circumstances due to which De Schepper has unwillingly forsaken the peace and quiet of home to return to his earlier duties.

De Schepper asks Dantiscus whether he may congratulate him on obtaining the Ermland bishopric. He wants to know if this is a financially advantageous change. He mentions Stabius’ judgment [perhaps a horoscope?].

De Schepper promises to write to Dantiscus further. At present he is not burdened with many affairs but just a single mission, so it will be easier for him to find time for friends.

Reverendissime in Christo Pater, domine honorandissime.

Omnia fere relaturus est Fabian Wojanowski (Fabian of Dąbrówka, Fabian Damerau) (†1540), courtier of King Sigismund I Jagiellon and Queen Bona Sforza, German tutor to their son Sigismund II Augustus. In 1531 he went back to his family name Damerau; Dantiscus' companion on his mission to Emperor Charles V and his successor as a royal envoy at the Imperial court; 1539-1540 Canon of Ermland (Warmia) (from 1538 coadiutor of Henryk von Snellenberg by Dantiscus' patronage) (KOPICZKO 2, p. 49; SBKW, p. 37)FabianusFabian Wojanowski (Fabian of Dąbrówka, Fabian Damerau) (†1540), courtier of King Sigismund I Jagiellon and Queen Bona Sforza, German tutor to their son Sigismund II Augustus. Quid facerem? Cum nonnulli optarent, quidam ambirent hoc munus, ego timerem, quod verebar, accidit. Scribere plura non est tempus, premor enim hoc tempore magnitudine negotiorum.

Audio Varmiensem episcopen dignitati tuae accessisse.[1] An gratulari debeam, nescio, cf. Vulg. Neque deerit occasio scribendi ad te, nunc maxime, cum legationi uni tantum intentus et a plurimis vacuus molestiis plus potero temporis suffurari, quod amicis impendam. Omnino quicquid actum erit ex me, Reverendissima Dominatio Vestra intelliget idque firmiter sibi persuadere de me eadem poterit. Cui me, uti patri, ex animo commendo.
