Letter #1714

Ioannes DANTISCUS to Tiedemann GIESE
Löbau (Lubawa), 1537-09-15

English register: Dantiscus informs Giese that royal envoy Mikołaj Nipszyc arrived the previous day, and on Monday (September 17), together with the royal chamberlain (Marcin Wolski), will set off for Frombork to attend the election of the Warmia bishop. Dantiscus hopes that Giese will receive Nipszyc and his eight-horse retinue at his house. This would greatly facilitate the planning of a strategy of action. If this is not possible, however, Giese should ask the Chapter to ensure comfortable accommodations for the royal envoy, who will also be present at the autumn assembly. He asks to be told where Nipszyc will be staying. Nipszyc will act according to the instructions specified by Dantiscus and Giese, everything can be discussed with him openly. In the postscript: The messenger carrying the present letter should wait in Frombork for the result of the election, and come to Dantiscus immediately with news from Giese as to the result, and as to the date of Giese’s arrival in Lubawa. Dantiscus hopes that Giese will find Nipszyc’s habits, of which the messenger will inform him, as much to his liking as Dantiscus does.
