Letter #4850

Ioannes DANTISCUS to Ermland (Warmia) Chapter
Heilsberg (Lidzbark), 1546-02-28

English register:

The parish priest of Tolkemit (Tolkmicko) [Joachim Simonis] has applied to Dantiscus so many times in the matter of the tithe from the inhabitants of Narz (Narusa), which he is wrongfully claiming from the leased estates, that Dantiscus has wearied of his petitions in so trivial a matter. The contract based on which the vicars leased the estates made no mention of the payment of a tithe, nor had it been paid previously. He therefore does not consent to their being compelled to pay tithes contrary to his earlier decision, especially since the parish priest was unable to enforce such tithes from his predecessors [bishops of Ermland (Warmia)], Fabian [von Lusian (Luzjański)] and Mauritius [Ferber] either. Once the present dispute is concluded, he permits the current holders of the estates to be dismissed and the estates to be leased to someone else with the addition of a tithe clause. He asks the canons to settle the matter in such a way that neither the parish priest nor the lessees of Narz (Narusa) suffer any loss.
