Letter #3254
[Ioannes DANTISCUS] to Christoph von ZEHMEN (CEMA)Heilsberg (Lidzbark), 1547-11-10
English register:
Dantiscus was sorry to receive the news contained in the addressee’s letter regarding the foot ailment afflicting his father, the voivode of Marienburg (Malbork) [Achatius von Zehmen (Cema)], sustained in Poznań on his return journey from a diplomatic mission.
The diet of Royal Prussia is approaching, which, unexpectedly for Dantiscus, has been convened in Wormditt (Orneta). Given the ill health of the voivode of Marienburg, his participation remains uncertain. Dantiscus hopes that an improvement in health will make it possible for him to take part in the joint consultations. He asks the addressee to persuade his father to come, arguing that the gravity of the issues to be discussed requires his presence.
Dantiscus did reply to the addressee’s previous letter of 6 November. If his reply reached him too late, the fault lies with his father’s subjects residing in the villages of Baysen (Bażyny) and Lumpe (Łępno), who refused to accept the letter and sent it back instead to Dantiscus’ burgrave in Wormditt. He has raised this matter in a letter to the addressee’s mother [Helene von Zehmen (Helena Cema)]. Let the addressee also ensure that this disobedience does not go unpunished.
