The bearer of the present letter, Martin Allexwangen, son of Jacob Allexwangen, a councillor of the town of Elbing (Elbląg), served Dantiscus as a scribe and discharged his duties commendably. Had it been his wish, Dantiscus would have been glad to retain him in his service. His father, however, considered that it would be better for him to be sent to the [royal] court and enter the service of the addressee. Since the young man’s father is aware of Dantiscus’ friendship with the addressee, he insists that the young man obtain a position as scribe with the addressee, or some other post in his household, through his intercession.

Dantiscus considers that the request should not be dismissed, coming as it did from Jacob Allexwangen, a man who had rendered distinguished service to the king [Sigismund I] and the Kingdom [of Poland] during the last war [with the Teutonic Order]. Allexwangen wishes to instil a similar disposition in his son by sending him to the royal court. Once the young man becomes acquainted with the customs there, he will learn to adapt to them and will be able to serve the royal interests in both war and peace.

Should the addressee concur with Dantiscus’ intercession and be willing to take the young man into service out of regard for the father’s person and for the son’s diligence, he should entrust him with such duties in which he considers him to be of particular use. Should he do so, he will win the goodwill of the father and of his entire family, and their favour will be shown through the young man’s diligent service.
